A Modern, Moody, Victorian Home at Christmas

Welcome to our home at Christmas! My husband and I have been slowly making this home our own over the last two years. It’s a late 1800s Victorian on the West Michigan lakeshore. Our first Christmas here, we had just moved in barely had any furniture!

Traditionally, we (by we, I mean I) decorate for Christmas the weekend directly after Thanksgiving. But this year, Thanksgiving was super late and we were out of town for the whole weekend, so I broke my own rules and decorated everything besides the tree a week before Thanksgiving.

We get a real tree every year #teamrealtree & I love that because it makes for a family affair! The smell of spruce filling up the house is magical and everything feels extra cozy with twinkly lights, candles and lots of textiles.

When it comes to holiday decorating, it’s easy to feel pressure to overspend and over buy. I encourage you to move things around and shop your own house before going out to buy new.

This year, I started with what I had, thrifted what I could and then purchased what I wasn’t able to come up with secondhand! I also made some DIY decor (like these dried oranges) for garland and ornaments.

I stuck to the black and white theme that runs throughout the house with our holiday decor. Black is my favorite color (or lack of color shall we say), and I don’t think that will ever change!

Don’t feel boxed in to red & green when it come to the holidays! If you love pink, decorate with pink! For Christmas, I used black stockings, black wrapping paper, and black candlesticks for all the moody vibes.

It can be so easy to get overwhelmed when it comes to holiday decorating. My advice to you, don’t feel pressured or rushed into buying a BUNCH of Christmas decor. Take your time over the years acquiring holiday decor that you really love!

Whether it’s items you find at your local thrift stores or decor you purchase some of my favorites like Home Goods, Target, or Hobby Lobby, don’t just buy to keep up with the holiday homes on Instagram. Buy holiday decor with purpose and intention!
