A Magical Trip to Tulum, Mexico: On a Budget

We traveled to Tulum almost a year ago, and I’m just now getting around to blogging about it. This trip was way too good and way too affordable not to share! Seriously, we spent less than $2,000 on a six day trip, including airfare. Our condo was ON the beach. We couldn’t have asked for a better vacation than this. I’m dying to go back (hence the random blog post on a trip we took a year ago).

The first thing we did was book our flights. This makes the trip legit in my eyes, so I wanted to do it as soon as possible! Then we started searching for Airbnbs to stay at in Tulum. You guys, the location of this Airbnb was to die for and so was the price!

When we arrived we had to pinch ourselves. It was too good to be true. The condo sat RIGHT on the beach. Like, our backyard was the beach, and there was a huge glass sliding door that led out to it. I never in a million years would have thought we could afford to stay RIGHT on the beach.

Not only was the condo right on the beach, but we also had our very own cenote. The Yucatan Pennisula is known to have the world’s largest number of underwater sinkholes, or cenotes. They are formed when limestone is gradually eroded over hundreds of years and make excellent spots for swimming. Ours was a bit chilly, but swimming in a beautiful cenote was a once in a lifetime experience. We felt like we were in a fantasy land. Very romantic indeed.

We stocked up on groceries and alcohol at the local supermarket. Our days consisted of making eggs with avocado for breakfast, mid morning mimosas, snacking on chili lime chips and homemade guacamole throughout the day and washing them down with fruity blended margaritas that we made ourselves, and then heading into town to grab tacos for dinner. It was seriously paradise. One of the most relaxing vacations I have ever been on.

We splurged on dinner one of the six nights. We went to the trendy part of Tulum and enjoyed delicious craft cocktails as we waited for our table. I ordered champagne and a full fish for dinner (head and eyeballs included) and it was amazing. After we indulged, we headed back to our Airbnb for an early turn in.

We spent one day venturing to visit the Mayan Ruins, and it was well worth the trip. We toured the grounds for about an hour. They have done a tremendous job keeping the history alive through preservation and care. There was also a beautiful beach for swimming, so if you visit, be sure to wear your swimsuit!

Tulum, Mexico was definitely a trip that I did not want to end. I seriously contemplated how I could just leave my life in the US behind and move into that condo full time. The food, people, location, views, everything was picture perfect, and I would highly, highly recommend our Airbnb.
