La Lastra Winery Tour Sienna Italy

If you read about our Italy trip a few months ago, you know it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. That said, our winery tour in Sienna was absolutely magical. In fact, it might be one of my favorite memories from the trip. We had spent the last four days dealing with travel nightmares, and we finally got the chance to enjoy the culture, wine, and food of Italy at La Lastra. We booked the experience through Airbnb.

Getting to the Winery

We drove 30 minutes to reach the winery which was situated up a tiny, one lane, winding cobble road. Of course, we managed to get lost a couple times on the way, and Andrew stalled the car on a crazy steep hill. Don’t make the same mistake with transportation that we did.

Thank you to the man in the pickup truck who honked at us viciously. I was only having a panic attack. We eventually made it up the hills to the winery, but we were 25 minutes late and there was no one in sight (I might have shed a few tears by now). We sat in the outdoor courtyard feeling defeated, until a wonderful Italian lady, who turned out to be the chef, came outside to escort us to the group.

The Vineyard Tour

She led us out to the vineyard where our host taught us about the grapes and the harvesting process. The views were absolutely magnificent. Pictures will never do them justice. After we learned about the grapes, we were escorted into the room where they turn the grapes into wine. We learned about the fermentation and aging process and the difference between making red and white wine.

Dinner & Wine Tasting

Next, was where the magic really happened. We sat down for our “tasting and light lunch,” with a group of 10 strangers. The tasting was actually five full glasses of wine and the light lunch was a delicious homemade pasta, homemade bread, prosciutto with olive oil, and a sweet desert to finish.

We all talked and laughed like old friends. A moment frozen in time. One older woman in the group announced she would like to make a toast, and so she did. The experience was once in a lifetime. We purchased two bottles of wine to bring back to the States and we are saving them for a very special occasion (like getting married).
