I think it’s safe to say the world is collectively ready to say goodbye to 2021… which felt a little like 2020 version 2.0 For many of us, social distancing may still prevent gathering with our friends or going to traditional town celebrations.

Although New Years Eve may look a little different, there are still ways to make the night fun and memorable! Here are seven ideas for a festive at-home New Years Eve celebration.

Ideas for an At-Home New Years Celebration

Start a new tradition. Do you have a fun New Years Eve tradition? Adopt one this year! Some families open the front and back doors to “welcome” the new year into the home. Other families bang pots and pans together or smash a plate, and yet another fun one is to stand on a chair, count down to midnight, then “leap” into the new year!

Host a virtual countdown with family and friends. Stuck at home this holiday? That doesn’t mean you can’t “see” your loved ones. Gather everyone into a Zoom call and count down to the new year together.

Make your favorite hors d’oeuvres and have an informal wine tasting. For a romantic celebration, build a charcuterie board and grab a few favorite wines. Have fun with your partner trying adventurous cheeses and new wines. Throw in some fruits, nuts, and chocolates too.

Binge your favorite movie or television. New Years Eve is the perfect night for binge-watching a favorite movie series or television show. Go bold with long series like the Harry Potter canon, classic James Bond films, the Rocky saga, or the Peter Jackson Tolkien movies. Or pull out a few classic Christmas movies to hold onto the season a little longer. Add popcorn or hot cocoa (or both!) to make movie night cozy.

Put together a puzzle. Prefer a quieter evening? Make some hot tea and cocoa and put together a huge puzzle. See if you can complete it in one night! Then be sure to save your creation with some Mod Podge Puzzle Glue.

Play a few board games together — even virtually! Did you know you can play video games over Zoom? As long as both parties own the board game and promise not to cheat! Pull out some family favorites like Monopoly, chess, Settlers of Catan, or Catch Phrase. There are also online options for games like Cards Against Humanity, just conference call your friends for a good laugh.

Coordinate with neighbors. Invite all your neighbors to come out onto their porches or driveways to cheer in the new year! If you feel comfortable doing so, you could make a socially distanced hot cocoa station with disposable cups and sanitizer. Prep the hot cocoa ahead in a dispensable thermos and use tongs for any “toppings” like marshmallows. Everyone can safely count down together and cheer in 2022.
