This year, I decided to create a template of my own to reflect on 2018 and plan for 2019. When I first created the template, I wasn’t sure if I should separate business and personal reflections and goals, but after some thought I kept coming back to the fact that the two are truly intertwined.
How We Work is Changing
Work is changing. Most of us carry it with us in our pockets at all times. We even sleep right next to it. Because work has become 24/7 (especially if you are an entrepreneur) the way we look at it has to change. For that reason, the planning template I created is all encompassing.
Balance & Burnout
When I reflected on 2018 there was a theme that kept coming up. A lack of balance is the best way I can describe it. I think many of us face this challenge as business owners. We are so entrenched in our businesses that we put blinders on to the rest of our needs and wants. Eventually, this leads to burnout. After working two months of 70-80 hour work weeks this summer, I crashed hard… and so did my business.
Making More Time for Rest
Looking at the new year, I see so much opportunity for growth. One of the areas I want to grow in is balance. I don’t want my scale weighed down by my work. I own this business because I love it. As soon as that feeling is drowning under the weight of 80 hour work weeks hits, I have to go back to the drawing board and reevaluate. The solution… don’t work 80 hours weeks in 2019. It’s not effective for anyone. I suffer. Clients suffer. My spouse suffers. Burnout isn’t good for any party involved.
I’m committing to slicing my pie a little different this year. I’m prioritizing what keeps me happy and healthy both mentally and physically because THAT is when my business thrives.
